Shiatsu-Do

‘Shiatsu’ means finger pressure. ‘Do’ (as in Aikido) means “the way.”

Pressure is applied along the meridian pathways and acupuncture points combined with joint rotation and gentle stretching. This stimulates the flow of chi (energy) around the body, releasing blockages and promoting good health and relaxation. ‘The way’ of Shiatsu is a way of healing, integration and balance.

What can Shiatsu do for you?

Often minor complaints will disappear after one session leaving you invigorated and relaxed. Over a course of treatments specific problems can be greatly relieved, and eventually may clear up completely.

Shiatsu is not invasive, it is an ancient oriental art used for preventative healthcare.

Shiatsu-do teaches how to see the entire human being in body, mind and spirit, how to recognise the process of health and illness and how to restore lost health.

The main difference between Western medicine and Oriental medicine is the basic theory of the Chinese and Japanese that there is a life force called Chi ( or “Ki” in Japan) and that this life force flows within us, with a network of meridians connecting and co-ordinating all the internal organs, in a harmonious, balanced way. This harmony and balance is health. If the Chi energy is not flowing properly then there is disharmony and imbalance. This may manifest itself emotionally, mentally or physically.

An examination is done using Chinese medical diagnosis to assess the condition of the Chi energy and to find the cause of illness or pain. Shiatsu treatment restores balance to the Chi so it flows freely without obstruction so that the body can then heal itself. Shiatsu treats the whole person, not the disease and the person must be active in the process as restoring health will probably require looking at the whole lifestyle.

The Sessions

You will remain fully clothed for a treatment which takes place on a padded mat at floor level. Please bring warm, comfortable clothing and socks. Average sessions are one hour, first session includes consultation.

Barefoot Shiatsu

Barefoot Shiatsu is a strong and vigorous form of Shiatsu in which the practitioner uses the feet to work. This allows a deeper treatment, releasing chronic tension and easing stagnation. This technique originates from Japan, where it was developed by Shizuko Yamamoto.

It is especially beneficial, when the client suffers from chronic pain, e.g. back pain, or feels stuck in life. Among many other techniques the treatment includes rocking with the feet, walking on the back (depending on medical history) and strong stretches. This helps to unlock tension and to move the blood, oxygen and energy around the body. It is a great energy pick up- invigorating and stimulating, yet deeply relaxing.

  • Don't Dismiss These Treatments as Placebos June 20, 2011

    Evidence is growing, based on carefully controlled studies, that certain non-pharmacological complementary interventions may be useful adjuncts to conventional care. For example, the pain of osteoarthritis can be lessened by acupuncture; tai chi may be helpful in reducing the pain of fibromyalgia; and massage and manipulative therapies may contribute to the relief of chronic back pain and related functional impairments. Furthermore, evidence from basic research points to ways in which such interventions use the body’s own pathways known to be involved in response to pain.
    Should we dismiss any benefits as mere placebo effects? Or should we explore the possibility, increasingly suggested by the science, that some complementary interventions provide powerful tools for studying the contributions of attention, touch, time, and reassurance, which are now in short supply in our health care system?

  • Acupressure to treat traumatic brain injury March 15, 2011

    A new study has shown that an ancient form of complementary medicine may be effective in helping to treat people with mild traumatic brain injury.

    The results indicate a link between the acupressure treatments and enhanced cognitive function in study subjects with mild traumatic brain injury, or TBI.

    Fitness Instructor Levana Benabe looks like one of those people who’s been fit all her life. Not true. A car accident took its toll.

    Then she discovered Yamuna Body Rolling and went to Vancouver, British Columbia for training.

    Pilates Seattle International Director Lauren Stephen was so impressed with Levana’s transformation that she decided to offer Yamuna classes at her studio.

    “The one thing that sets it apart from other kind of body work out there is that you’re bone stimulating,” says Benabe. “You’re actually working very closely on the bone.”
