Complementary Medicine Popular With Healthcare Workers

More than three-fourths of U.S. healthcare workers turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), quite often to alleviate anxiety, according to a new analysis.

Overall, 76% of healthcare professionals said they used at least one form of complementary or alternative therapy compared with 63% of the general population (P<0.001), wrote Pamela Jo Johnson, MPH, PhD, from Allina Hospitals and Clinics in Minneapolis, and colleagues in Health Services Research.

Additionally, the most commonly reported reasons for using either practitioner-based CAM or self-treatment were to maintain a sense of well-being and address anxiety.
