Sleep disorders, illness and lifestyle change


The German Association for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGPPN) have published a warning that sleep disorders can not only be an indication of psychological illness but also of severe physical ones too. For example, chronic sleep deprivation can result in obesity and, in extreme cases, lead to the onset of diabetes.

The first port of call for a person suffering from a sleep disorder is their general practitioner, who can treat the problem with medication if necessary.

However, in many cases a change of lifestyle is the best alternative with patients, for example, asked to reduce stress levels or alcohol intake, two of the most common causes of sleep disorders.
