Psychotherapy essential in treatment of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures

Following a pilot randomized controlled trial with the drug Sertraline, a larger scale research project has begun examining the combination of pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment in helping patients who suffer from psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES). The drug therapy dramatically reduces the incidence of the seizures, but psychotherapy is anticipated as being essential in identifying and relieving the underlying psychological triggers to the seizures.
